About SCORE

For fifty years, SCORE has been a dedicated and invaluable resource in helping small businesses get off the ground, grow, and achieve their goals through education and mentorship.

SCORE is a nonprofit association supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the tireless contributions of more than 12,000 volunteers nationwide that allow us to deliver our services at no charge or at very low cost.

What is SCORE?
The SCORE Association is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth, and success of small businesses nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the Small Business Administration.

Who are SCORE’s mentors?
SCORE Association volunteers serve as “Counselors to America’s Small Business.” Working and retired executives and business owners donate their time and expertise as volunteer business mentors and provide confidential counseling and mentoring free of charge.

Why should I use SCORE?

Do I have to make an appointment, or are walk-ins ok?
Either one! Walk-ins are welcomed at the SCORE offices located at Fashion Square Mall, but you can also set up a 1-on-1 appointment. Contact us today.

How much is the mentoring?
The mentoring is offered free of charge.

What kind of seminars does SCORE offer?
SCORE Orlando offers a variety of classes and seminars to its clients. It offers classes on a variety of business topics: Marketing, Social Media, Developing Business Plans, Developing Financial Plans, Taxes, Health Care, etc. For a full list of offered classes, click here.

How much do the seminars cost?
The classes are offered at a very low, affordable cost. Prices vary. Check for our upcoming seminars, and their prices here.

How are seminar costs refunded?

You may always change the date of your workshop by emailing us at score@nationalec.org or calling 407/420-4893.  Refunds may be requested if the seminar is cancelled by contacting us at score@nationalec.org or 407/420-4893.  

Do I have what it takes to own and manage a small business?
To determine if you what it takes to succeed in starting and running your own business, you may want to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I a self-starter?
  • How well do I get along with a variety of personalities?
  • How good am I at making decisions?
  • Do I have the physical and emotional stamina to run a business?
  • How well do I plan and organize?
  • Are my attitudes and drive strong enough to maintain motivation?
  • How will the business affect my family?

After asking these questions of yourself, ask someone else who knows you well who will provide you with honest answers. Compare their answers to yours and consider your options.

Does SCORE give out legal advice?
No. You can discuss business situations with SCORE advisors if needed, but advisors cannot tell you what actions to take in any matter.

Do you do taxes?
No. Advisors can discuss business situations involving your taxes, but cannot do them or tell you how fill and file your taxes.

What is a business plan?
A business plan is a written summary of what you hope to accomplish by being in business and how you plan to organize your resources to meet your goals. It is a vehicle to describe your business and your product or services, and is a road map for operating your business and measuring progress along the way. The plan describes the market, the industry, customers and competitors, your products/services, your marketing plans and your operations along with sales and cash flow forecasts. The business plan is a document that should change as your business grows.

Do I really need a business plan?
Yes, you really need a business plan in order to ensure success of your company. Proper planning is a necessity when starting your own business. And SCORE Orlando is here to help you develop your business plan, and your business. For free!

Will SCORE help me write and complete my business plan?
No, we will not write or complete the business plan for you. However; our SCORE mentors will provide you with information, tools, methods and guidance to assist you in preparing your business plan. We will review and critique it. We also offer workshops on preparing business plans.
